Safety cannot be put on one person, whether in a crew, on a large job site, or within a company. If you see something, do something for that unsafe action or situation that you ignored and tolerated will become your company’s new standard. Safety truly is everyone’s responsibility.
What does working safe look like? What does working safe feel like? As we wrap up Construction Safety Week, we look back on what we learned and how we plan on continuing the messages of the week throughout the year. This year we celebrated the Holistic side of safety. Yogi Berra’s famous quote, “Baseball is 90% mental and 10% physical,” translates well to working safely.
The weather is warming up, street work moratoriums are being lifted and the annual rush to the streets is about to begin. Street work poses a unique set of challenges. We introduce a level of uncertainty with the public. We cannot control what they do, how they act and more importantly, how they drive around our work zones. According to the Center for Construction Research and Training, “struck-by incidents are a leading cause of death among construction workers, and since 1992 the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry.” Struck by incidents are also part of OSHA’s Focus Four. The Focus Four hazards are responsible for 64% of all fatalities in construction.
This year, Road Check inspectors will capture data on two categories, corresponding to the two main inspection categories of the North American Standard Level I Inspection – driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. This video demonstrates a proper DOT Circle Check.
It has been about a year now since COVID forced us all to move to a virtual training platform. A question that is being asked in training circles is, “So how is it going for your company?”. First, what is virtual training? Virtual training can be done in two ways, asynchronous and synchronous. Asynchronous training is when the training program can be completed at any time. It is pre-recorded, and the learner has control over when they attend the training. Synchronous training is live training. This is your webinars and video conference live meeting training. The learner must take it when the trainer is conducting it or miss the training session.
Risk is everywhere. Environmental, health, and safety risks present themselves on every project performed. One way of managing those risks is through the process of a Job Hazard Analysis. A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is often referred to in several ways (Job Safety Analysis, Activity Hazard Analysis, Pre-Task Analysis), but the steps to create one are similar. Completing a JHA is a requirement for every job performed.
You were forced to face challenge after challenge. You were forced to adapt and overcome obstacles you might never have otherwise encountered. You were forced to be more resilient than you thought possible. 2020 forced everyone to grow. Not just a little, but exponentially.
