Trucks Make Wide Right Turns
We’ve all seen the wide right turn signs on trucks, but not everyone understands why they are there. Today’s Safety Saturday moment explains wide right turns.
Due to the length, weight, and higher center of gravity of trucks, they make wide turns in all directions to ensure they don’t tip over. Right turns are particularly dangerous because trucks first have to swing left in order to have space for the right turn. This opens up a gap in the road that drivers of smaller cars may think they can enter. This is incredibly dangerous, as should the driver of a smaller vehicle do this, they would end up directly in the truck driver’s blind spot and a collision could occur. Please allow truck drivers the space they need to properly turn so that everyone can safely get to where they’re going.
Until next time, from all of us at the W. L. French Safety Department, stay safe out there.
